Audible.com has made its global headquarters in Newark since 2007, when we relocated from suburban Wayne, because we wanted to be part of the city’s vibrant, diverse, and fast-improving ethos, and it’s one of the best decisions we’ve made as a company. The ease of access made possible by Newark’s transport hub status makes our location convenient for employees commuting from Brooklyn and Manhattan as well as all over New Jersey, and actors and actresses coming from New York to record in our studios can get to our offices quickly and easily. Train and highway access enhances our ability to recruit strong talent from farther away. Many younger Audible employees have been relocating to the developing loft dwellings in various Newark neighborhoods, and Newark itself offers a motivated and often technologically competent workforce.
Newark’s business culture includes big company stalwarts like PSE&G and Prudential, and they have been joined by up-and-coming manufacturing companies, smart and well-financed property developers, growth-oriented tech companies, and smaller entrepreneurs launching businesses by the day.
Audible has supported North Star Academy, a nationally recognized Newark charter school, since 2007. Audible Scholarships provide outstanding North Star graduates with Audible internships and other financial support throughout college. The very successful integration of this mentoring, internship and college scholarship program has become a source of shared company pride.
Newark Public Library
Audible is committed to the Newark Public Library, the main branch of which is adjacent to Audible’s offices in the heart of historic downtown, and which has been a major force in the intellectual, cultural and economic life of greater Newark for more than a century. Like the library, Audible is committed to education and literacy, and our demographic comes from all quarters. In 2009, Audible CEO Donald Katz chaired the library’s annual gala fundraiser.
Tickets to events at Newark institutions
Active participation in the Newark Renaissance has been a centerpiece of our company culture, and we regularly patronize new restaurants and enjoy company-sponsored tickets to NJ Performing Arts Center events as well as Devils, Nets, and Red Bulls games.
Audible is an annual participant in Operation Santa, which provides toys, clothes and other necessities to Newark’s neediest children, wrapping gifts together as a company as a prelude to our annual holiday party. In 2011, Audible employees purchased gifts for over 100 Newark children.
